武藝生於吉林省，分別於1989及1993年在中央美術學院國畫系學士及碩士畢業。武藝熟習傳統國畫，能畫善鑑，多才多藝。武藝曾學習多種傳統畫法，但其創作風格卻不屬於任何派別，純粹發自內心，用最簡練的筆觸繪出當代種種面貌。
「筆這個東西一方面是形式上的問題，另外也是一個觸及精神性的東西。傳統水墨畫的筆墨也還和特定的感受相連，但是它將感覺轉化為一種程式化的筆墨去處理。傳統中給我觸動最深的是徐渭的東西，他直接去書寫，而且重感覺。我想我的畫面上的東西還是重直覺的。也只有這樣才能和心靈更接近一些。」1
