出生於上海的董陽孜，從八歲開始練習書法。1966年從台灣師範大學畢業，1970年拿到麻州大學油畫和陶瓷專業的碩士學位。董陽孜倡導古典哲學，從中國歷史的道德文本中汲取靈感來創作她獨特的草書風格創作形式。這件作品的標題是來自於清代官員林則徐的一段話《有容乃大，無欲則剛》（拍品編號528），林氏最為人熟知的是他德政禁止鴉片貿易的德政。
董陽孜以她的大膽表現和創新的形式，成為享譽國際的書法家。她筆下的每一件作品都體現她生活和行動的原則。不同於傳統的水墨畫家，她創造大型作品，並與其他藝術家合作大型裝置，包含舞台和設計作品。她總是強調書法是一種多方面的藝術形式，「我是學藝術的，我不是書法家，我如果只是書法家，書法就死掉了！」1
