鄭重賓在水墨的天地間游刃自如,且熟習藝術史,得以在創作中恣意探索抽象藝術的元素。他受訓於浙江美術學院及三藩市藝術學院,因此其創作呈現東西藝術語言的豐富交流。鄭重賓一直專注水墨紙本創作,亦嘗包括以西式畫筆蘸壓克力彩捕捉道家之「氣」,或以傳統水墨闡釋抽象神髓。他說:「我的宗旨是探究水墨媒介的邏輯,以及其感知特質、超越界限之間的交替和作品中的物質感」。
鄭重賓在《四個定義001》(拍品編號517)的四幅畫布上分別展示空間的四個定義並探究水墨媒介。他在層層濃墨中混入白色壓克力彩,彷彿營造出一場明與暗、虛與實之間的「鬥爭」。強勢奔放的筆法與畫面上兩種截然不同的水質顏料交織出的無限細膩變化形成獨特的對比。墨與彩交疊,塑造出濃郁、豐富的層次,賦予畫面近乎雕塑般的質感。本作是鄭氏的較早期作品,當時他正處於試驗階段,一直嘗試混合水墨和壓克力顏料,創作多聯幅作品。
鄭氏的探究延伸至裝置及錄像藝術實驗,展示其不斷挑戰水墨媒材界限的熱忱。他的作品曾於世界各地的知名機構刊登及展出,當中包括香港藝術中心、上海美術館、阿爾伯塔大學美術館、三藩市亞洲藝術博物館、亞太博物館、釜山現代藝術博物館、中國國家畫院以及中國國家美術館,更被納入英國大英博物館、美國三藩市亞洲藝術博物館、美國洛杉磯郡立美術館、德國戴慕勒藝術收藏館、新加坡金沙集團及香港M+視覺文化博物館等公共藝術收藏。
