谷文達生於上海，畢業於上海市工藝美術學校，後在中國美術學院取得藝術碩士學位。1987年起移居美國，是當今最知名並廣為展覽出版的當代中國藝術家之一。他打破了山水畫作的界限，顛覆了漢字與書法的含義，提出發人深省的問題——中國藝術家在現代世界中存在意義為何？
谷文達曾於浙江美術學院（中國美術學院前身）就讀及執教，他摒棄了導師陸儼少的山水風格，轉而研究半抽象水墨藝術。1980年代初，他的作品將單色水墨與超現實主義圖像結合在一起，使人聯想到性器官或是人體私處。此時的谷文達已經被公認是中國最前衛革新的藝術家之一，憑藉自己的出色書法及篆刻作品贏得多個獎項。1987年，谷文達獲一藝術家交流項目資助，出訪加拿大，後移居美國。《墨谷白水》（1986年作）（拍品編號512）是谷文達於國際藝界初露頭角時的山水作品，將那時他極具爭議性的風格表現得淋漓盡致。同樣是在1980年代，谷文達開始創作《遺失的王朝》系列（拍品編號532），重新演繹傳統水墨風景畫，結合書法，對社會評論中常見的經典文化圖像發出詰問。
谷文達是公認的水墨大師，玩弄文字與書法於股掌之間——將筆劃移動或連結——並將山水元素重組更改。其作品打破了嚴格的文化規限，挑戰傳統權威，藏於全球各大博物館及私人收藏中，藝術家曾舉辦無數國際個展、群展及雙年展，包括北京、香港、台北、紐約、倫敦、巴黎、柏林及多倫多等地。香港藝術館、台北台灣歷史博物館、北京中國美術館、舊金山現代藝術館、布魯克林美術館、亞洲協會、紐約PS1現代藝術博物館、上海美術館、牛津現代藝術博物館以及熱那亞當代藝術館等均為谷文達舉辦過展覽。
