Greatly influenced by traditional Indonesian decorative art, Widayat was known for his meticulous ornamental paintings of the Indonesian landscape. As an artist who had lived through the colonial days, Widayat also strived to rid his artistic style from the Dutch traditions, attempting to reinvent a new chapter for post-colonial Indonesian art.
The unusual colour palette of Gerhana Matahari di Hutan (Solar Eclipse in the Forest) seems to conjure an image of a tropical wonderland. The dense and complex composition unravels upon closer inspection thus presenting itself as a mystical fantasy of jungle life and fully demonstrating Widayat’s signature “decora-magical” techniques. This painting exemplifies the beauty of nature that makes reference to the rich Indonesian landscape and wilderness.
Possibly inspired by the Indonesian tradition of batik handicraft, Widayat’s painting alludes to the detailed patterns found in batik textiles. Though the composition is brimming with many shapes and forms, the painting succeeds to convey the tranquility and diversity of the natural word.
