「若以朱銘現在渾然樸純的個人風格來看他的作品，很可能會忽視了他早年精密的傳統訓練。自幼拜師修習得來的嫻熟工夫，使朱銘運刀舞斧一如老畫家之調筆用墨，功力之深湛，遠非一般學院徒生所能望企及。他早期作品以傳統神像與歷史英雄為主，其清爽俐落的刀法，鮮明靈動的神韻已十分明顯。雕刻的神像和歷史人物，追求使神明顯赫，朱銘透過作品刻畫出其超乎個人和時空的宇宙力量。」
