王沂東曾經說：「我的畫，畫的是別人，表達的卻是自己的內心。」對於藝術家而言，書信具有深刻的情感意義；在他成長的年代，通信工具並不發達，在沒有電話的情況下，書信成為自己與意中人互通款曲的重要途徑，特別是他在北京進修之時，一封來自故鄉的信，從郵局收悉到返回住所，打開再反覆閱讀的過程，那心跳不已的感覺，殊為難忘；因此，「書信」、「讀信」的主題，成為他日後表現故鄉純摯愛情的重要環節；王沂東在旅美之時，曾經深入研究古典大師的作品，在《讀信》中，即可見他將個人的青春記憶，結合古典語言，成為含蓄細膩的戲劇場景，其中從左邊進入的外側光，似有妙用十七世紀荷蘭大師維梅爾（Johannes Vermeer）的經典佈局。畫中主角，原是藝術家故鄉的一位食肆店員，藝術家偶然間在她身上發現青葱健康之美，霎時深受感動，於是邀請她擔任模特兒，作為《讀信》的主角。
