丁衍庸以西方繪畫為藝術基礎,壯年以後兼攻水墨,是故其油畫作品往往可見傳統之美,而水墨作品亦顯示出現代精神。丁公水墨被認為體現出國畫寫意之傳統,蓋因寫意之路最不囿於陳規,易於接引其西學素養。《松樹松鼠》(拍品編號5065)及《雙鳥》(拍品編號5064)雖為水墨作品,卻可見藝術家對於墨色之運用別具心思,《松樹松鼠》強調線條,以墨點為松果,以疾速強勁之毛筆中鋒勾勒松幹松葉,以平塗溝成松鼠,最終卻組成具有長立方體之幾何結構,盡得點、線、面、體之元素;《雙鳥》之用色更為特別,藝術家似乎用上更為柔軟的羊毫,淡墨色彩如水銀亮燦,奇石、雙鳥和樹葉高度抽象,有如立體主義或抒情抽象繪畫可見之典型方塊,樹幹輔以濃墨飛白強化結構,其色彩哲學於歸於「墨分五色」之大宗,卻始終流露野獸主義充滿感情的用色特徵。中國現代藝術先驅注重研究國畫、油畫媒材與技巧之間的交換運用,丁公此兩幅作品可為佳例。
