丁衍庸以西方繪畫為藝術基礎，壯年以後兼攻水墨，是故其油畫作品往往可見傳統之美，而水墨作品亦顯示出現代精神。丁公水墨被認為體現出國畫寫意之傳統，蓋因寫意之路最不囿於陳規，易於接引其西學素養。《松樹松鼠》（拍品編號5065）及《雙鳥》（拍品編號5064）雖為水墨作品，卻可見藝術家對於墨色之運用別具心思，《松樹松鼠》強調線條，以墨點為松果，以疾速強勁之毛筆中鋒勾勒松幹松葉，以平塗溝成松鼠，最終卻組成具有長立方體之幾何結構，盡得點、線、面、體之元素；《雙鳥》之用色更為特別，藝術家似乎用上更為柔軟的羊毫，淡墨色彩如水銀亮燦，奇石、雙鳥和樹葉高度抽象，有如立體主義或抒情抽象繪畫可見之典型方塊，樹幹輔以濃墨飛白強化結構，其色彩哲學於歸於「墨分五色」之大宗，卻始終流露野獸主義充滿感情的用色特徵。中國現代藝術先驅注重研究國畫、油畫媒材與技巧之間的交換運用，丁公此兩幅作品可為佳例。
