《採菊東籬下》乃丁公按香港資深傳媒人、《新晚報》總編輯羅孚之邀請，為1978年在香港舉行的「中國菊花展覽」創作的點睛作品，亦是丁公畢生繪畫當中，唯一以陶淵明為主題之作，在當年的展覽專冊上，報方更將此與八大山人的《瓶菊》並列，以突顯其重要性。丁公在此一抹成山、簡練概括，淡墨濕筆，隨性揮掃；用焦墨勾勒人物輪廓，再用濕墨平塗，用水與墨自然的過度表現出衣紋層次。畫中的陶淵明凝視手中黃菊，表情怡然自得。身邊籬笆，秋菊正淩寒綻放，畫面情景感極強。丁公樂於把筆下人物形象變得諧謔喜感，卻禪機微露，正如本作的陶淵明仙風道骨而不造作，筆筆撩撥觀賞者的心靈入髓。
