體型細小的屏風稱為硯屏，用以遮蔽硯台，避免磨墨時墨汁被風乾。美國紐約大都會博物館藏一幅由宮廷畫家謝環作於十五世紀的卷軸《杏園雅集圖》中，可見硯台側放置一件類似的硯屏。

無論是黃花梨、紫檀或紅木製的硯屏，傳世品都屬罕見。

一例載於李鑄晉、屈志仁編，《中國書齋：晚明文人的藝術生活》，紐約，1987年，頁125，收錄上海寶山縣顧村鎮萬曆年間 (1573-1620年) 朱守誠夫婦合葬墓中出土一件體型較小的紫檀硯屏。
