李庚熱衷於中國古典藝術及文學，早年深受其父李可染的薰陶。與父親著名的恢宏山水畫相較，李庚作品的情感與構圖更見抽象，更具詩意。本作來自他向二十世紀初著名奥地利作曲家古斯塔夫·馬勒（1860 – 1911年）致敬的《馬勒交響曲》系列（拍品編號2872），藝術家對他的音樂深感共鳴。馬勒廣為人識的交響曲《大地之歌》啟發自唐代大師李白、王維、孟浩然及錢起的詩文之美與無常虛幻，被廣譽為他最偉大的作品之一，更是世界頂尖指揮家及管弦樂團演出的經典名曲。
現居日本的李庚在京都造型藝術大學教授日本畫。作為教者及藝術家，他的畫作融合其學術與藝術的追求。《馬勒交響曲》為藝術家持續的單色墨染畫系列，體會其喜愛作曲家的偉大鉅作。水墨畫猶如交響樂團的現場演出，同樣講究絲毫不差：一鍵一弦，音調即發；水墨亦然，一筆一劃，紙上即現。兩種創作均不容後退，也無從修改，只得向前。音樂隨著墨勢在他的作品中注入悠揚韻律。畫作與樂曲沒有明文邏輯，而兩者的美學標準尤為相似，分別以視與聽親身感受而來。馬勒交響曲是李庚的靈感泉源，也是其創作的精髓。
