款識:至正庚子(1360)春,摹巨然筆法。馬文壁。
題跋:
(一)馬公名琬,字文璧,以字行,書畫題名多用之。明洪武初年仕撫州太守,故亦稱馬撫州。予早年見其自書詩冊一幀極佳,蓋負廣文三絕之譽。平日作畫多用南宮墨法。此卷作於元時,特仿巨然,章法渾成,筆墨深厚,有不可以蹊徑求者。宜其於鷗波、房山兩公,及當時四大家外,獨樹一幟也。同治三年甲子(1864)仲冬購得此卷,重加裝治。越歲乙丑新正二日,閒窗獨坐,人事益靜,攤書讀畫,陶然自樂,因展此卷細觀之,為識數語,以示琥兒、珊兒。長沙周壽昌荇農氏甫書。鈐印:「思益堂」、「應父」
(二)昨日午炎,歊中自史館下直歸,雖解衣就涼,而塵容褦襶,無能滌去。兀坐齋中,烹茗獨啜,取此卷徐徐玩之。覺清風漸來,如行深山中,幾有空翠濕衣,不復知人間炎熱之苦。筆墨之妙,乃能移人若是哉。同治四年(1865)閏月廿有六日,曉窗坐涼,援筆記此。鈐印:「荇農鑒賞」
(三)前日見北苑山水大幅,係董文敏四源堂之一,所云得自徐國公府者。以五十金為人購去,再往求之竟不可得,歎想屢日。其畫初視之,殊草率不工,張之壁上,遠觀之則煙景變滅,人物樹石、汀洲沙渚、雲客山色,層出不窮,愈視愈引人入勝,惟舊藏營邱山水大幅足以敵之。此卷極意橅巨然,頗得古人筆妙,明以後便無此老筆矣。苦雨放晴,閒窗展玩,回憶北苑幅不能置賞,此聊慰予心。丁卯(1867)孟秋月下旬二日,自翁識於京邸之退思室。鈐印:「老荇」
(四)前歲購得北苑兩大幅,俱絕佳,不減丁卯秋間所見,蓋相距又八年矣。計數年來所遇宋元名迹不乏,獨馬撫州遺跡不多見,則此卷益可寶愛矣。物以罕而見珍,況本可珍而又真罕者耶?光緒二年丙子(1876)春花朝日,自菴老人重識於宣南邸庽之根福軒。鈐印:「周壽昌印」、「自盦」

註:周壽昌(1814-1884)清代詩人。字應甫,一字荇農,號友生、自庵等,湖南長沙人。道光二十五年進士,由編修累遷內閣學士兼禮部侍郎。光緒初罷官居京師,以著述為事,詩文、書、畫,俱負重名。山水極秀潤,有士氣,又富收藏。著有《思益堂集》、《漢書註校補》。
密韻樓早期稱「傳書堂」,是浙江南潯藏書家蔣汝藻(1876–1954)的藏書樓,因復得祖傳宋代湖州詞人周密著《草窗韵語》孤本,故改稱「密韻樓」。蔣氏字元采,號孟蘋,別署樂庵,實業家。其藏書豐富,以宋元善本為多,是清末民初湖州四大藏書樓之一。

蔣汝藻長子蔣祖詒(1902–1973),字穀孫,號顯堂,又號峴翁。濡染家學,師從王國維先生,善辨碑拓古藉,精鑒書畫,嗜古器物,收藏經眼甚廣,與吳湖帆、龐萊臣、葉恭綽、譚敬、張珩等時有往來易物。40年代移居台灣,曾參與1961年「中國古藝術品展覽會」之設置展品審議,於美國等地展出多件國立故宮博物院之文物精品。晚年曾授教於台灣大學,常與莊尚嚴、台靜農等談藝賞翫,台靜農先生著《題顯堂所藏書畫錄》可窺探其收藏之精妙。
