-The colour of the actual painting is less vibrant than the image illustrated in catalogues. The peony in the actual painting is in purple-red colour instead of orange-red as illustrated in catalogues. Light foxing can be found near the top of the flower, on the right of the inscription, and near the middle of the bottom edge, which can be improved by restoration.

註:一九四九年,政權轉易,新局遂開,因應社會環境,白石老人以出身農家,且年高藝重,作品廣受中外歡迎,被奉為有象徵意義的藝術界代表人物,獲授予「人民藝術家」之榮譽,並擔任藝術界一連串高職。踏入最晚年,其藝術得到前所未有之推崇,使其心意舒暢,創作更勤,筆下毋受年齡拘限。這段期間,除少數應求者所請重複早年人物、山水外,題材以花卉蔬菓為多,粗枝大葉,老筆披離,用色明快響亮,生趣溢然。一九五五年以後,他對畫面細部掌控力開始下降,畫面與題字見散漫錯落,惟其率性純真不為畫法規條所束,非往昔可比。此時畫作,已全然不能用技法評價,觀者從中自可體會耆齡老人筆下放縱自由之精神境界。
本幅乃白石老人最晚期作品之一,寫於逝世當年,是年其身體狀態大不如前,意識常處於迷糊狀態,畫筆仍未停輟。題材有魚、牽牛、胡蘿卜、扁豆、雞冠花等,卻以牡丹為多。據其子齊良已記載,老人一生絕筆之作亦為此花。白石曾藏孟覲乙〈春聲圖〉,畫牡丹與雞,北京畫院藏白石畫稿中有「摹孟麗堂春聲畫稿」,他筆下牡丹多用孟氏畫中高枝叢開全景樣式,即使折枝冊頁亦似從孟畫中摘取一枝入畫。一九五四年白石為東北博物館所作花卉長卷中以牡丹收尾,筆力仍健,然五六年另開墨葉牡丹已現形散趨勢。北京榮寶齋所藏是年所作〈牡丹〉已與五七年數幅面貌極為類似,成為他最晚年牡丹樣式:祗畫單枝,省略構圖之慮;大筆筆尖重蘸洋紅,筆根飽含水分,見牡丹淋漓盡致,或一朵,或二三朵,實已無法分辨,全賴其墨筆點蕊方可辨依稀大概。紅花頂頭在上,花葉披離於下,枝幹盡棄,省穿插之繁,花葉由上而下,用花青黃綠,墨寫葉筋。有人謂此類為風中牡丹,實老人最後作畫,順手順心而為,得暢快之意,筆筆從左而右,自然生發,似由風生,實從心出。
齊良已曾言牡丹是白石老人一生最喜愛花卉之一,世人皆愛牡丹,以其鮮亮美麗,以其富貴喜人,作為職業畫家的白石愛畫牡丹固然與供需相關,然生性愛「畫好看的東西,畫有生氣的東西」,亦是他心愛牡丹的主觀所趨。他曾言:「外邦顏色有西洋紅,其色奪胭脂,余最寶之」,故他好使洋紅,此亦為其偏愛屢寫牡丹原因之一。四九年後,他仍保持職業畫家身份,賣畫於琉璃廠,潤格清晰注明用洋紅者同加工筆草蟲者加價一倍,「都是嚴格按照成本和付出的勞動來收費的」,對洋紅之珍視可見一斑。最後幾年白石極喜用洋紅,牡丹、荷花、雞冠花等皆施此色,尤以牡丹寫來最無形狀之顧慮,只需畫得花瓣叢生烘出花形,故屢屢畫得「塗紅抹碧牡丹肥,葉葉花花態未非」。齊良已把父親最後一幅牡丹用鐵夾子夾在鐵絲上,白石老人端視良久,又添數筆,再掛起來,點點頭:「要得」。這段敘述似乎令人想像他最後為世人留下這數幅牡丹時的情景。
白石老人一九五七年作品多署「九十七歲」,本幅寫「九十八歲」並非孤例,據傳世資料,如此署年者,尚有多幅,如〈 齊白石全集〉及薩本介著〈齊白石〉書中各有一幅〈牡丹〉,及張仃舊藏〈葫蘆〉。〈全集〉所收與本幅尺寸相若,或為相近時日內畫成。本幅與〈葫蘆〉「歲」字均有錯筆,似畫家題字時略有恍惚。寫作「九十八歲」,未知出諸老人神精恍惚,或重施丁丑「改齡」,瞞天過海之故計,意欲跨越「九十七歲」一年,以臻期頤!
