上款：「竹莊」即蔣維喬 (1873-1958)， 江蘇武進人。早年入南菁書院，研習經史。後留學東瀛，返國後，歷任商務印書館編輯、教育部秘書長、江西省教育廳長、東南大學校長及多家大專院校教授。他是著名哲學家，學術著作等身，尤精研佛學。
註：一九四一年，弘一法師自福建南安靈寺移居晉江檀林鄉福林寺，即本幅上題之「茀林」。
蔣維喬精通佛理，與法師屬故交。一九四二年二月十五日 (壬午元旦)，法師致函蔣氏，囑祈指導教誨其弟子李芳遠，並謂「拙書一葉附奉瑩覽」。同日另函李芳遠，亦提及「並復蔣居士書及橫披一葉」，應為託交芳遠轉呈蔣氏。兩函所謂「拙書一葉」、「橫披一葉」，似應指本幅，蓋信上署「元旦」與本幅署「歲朝」僅寸陰之隔矣！
