Condition

The carving is in good condition. There is a minute nibble to the tip of one claw. The actual colour of the stone is of a less orange-red tone than the catalogue illustration.

玉石神獸,漢代盛行。不同於人物陶俑,動物及神獸雕像大量見於墓葬之中,作鎮墓用,辟邪驅惡,守護墓主。大型石雕神獸,如獅、虎、翼獸等,常見於帝王及高官武將等墓葬甬道兩側,其面目凶煞,鎮墓守陵。此風於六朝時期達至鼎盛,時南京附近墓葬外見大量大型神獸石像。與此同時,玉雕動物、瑞獸亦隨之盛行。與較早期隨葬品中常見之玉牌、玉飾等平面玉雕不同,立體動物神獸作為獨立個體,不再僅為彰顯墓主身份地位,而更具鎮魔驅邪之神功,以護佑墓主。

此類玉雕之超凡工藝隨少量傳世佳作得以流存,本品當屬個中極罕珍品,充分展現古代匠人技藝之絕。黃玉色澤瑩潤,神獸造型依原石形狀而出,雕工細膩巧妙,實為傑作。僅見一例,可相媲美,售於紐約蘇富比1979年11月2日,編號51,現為何鴻卿爵士收藏。1979年拍賣時此玉被定代六朝,後因其與1972年咸陽(今西安)漢元帝墓附近出土之玉辟邪風格相似,Jessica Rawson 將其重新定為漢代,參見 Jessica Rawson,《Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing》,倫敦,1995年,圖版26:7。此玉雕辟邪現藏咸陽市博物館,載於《中國文物精華大辭典:金銀玉石卷》,上海,1996年,頁54,圖版166。

何鴻卿爵士所藏玉獸較之本品,尺寸略小(8.4 公分),造型特徵卻極近:皆怒目圓瞪,四爪鋒利,蓄勢待發;輪廓線條流暢,為典型漢代早期玉雕風格,深刻條紋分佈全身,凹凸層次分明,立體感十足;雙翼由肩部而出,長尾捲曲;並巧用玉石天然沁色,與整體相融。

另可比較清宮舊藏早期玉雕神獸,見一東漢辟邪例,藏台北故宮,展於《精彩一百:國寶總動員》,國立故宮博物院,台北,2012年,編號18。以及一漢代玉雕有翼獸,藏北京故宮,載於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集.玉器(上)》,香港, 1995 年,圖版201。

亦見一六朝玉雕瑞獸,錄於 Eskenazi,《Chinese Jades from a Private Collection》,倫敦,1976年,編號7,曾於1963年展於斯德哥爾摩,見 Bo Gyllensvard,《Celadon-Jade》,編號65,後於1975年展於維多利亞與艾伯特博物館,載於 Jessica Rawson 及 John Ayers,《Chinese Jade throughout the Ages》,倫敦,1975年,編號186。其形似獅,與前例相若,造型大氣,紋路深刻,鬃毛流暢,層次分明,螺旋紋精緻,且同作蓄勢待發之態,極富動感。圖錄中提及 Osvald Siren 觀點,認為此類玉獸與南京附近墓葬外所見大型石獸雕像相關,皆為六朝後期所製,參見 Osvald Siren,《Chinese Sculpture》,卷2,倫敦,1925年,圖版3-7,及9-13。

與本品可比類例皆罕,如一件六朝玉雕神獸,屬鄭德坤伉儷雅藏,載於屈志仁,《Chinese Jade from Han to Ch’ing》,亞洲協會,紐約,1980年,圖版12。另有兩稍小玉獸例,為鐘華培典藏,錄於葉義,《Chinese Jade Carving》,香港藝術館,香港,1983年,編號126及127。

本品原為許漢卿先生舊藏。許漢卿於1882年生於山東,清末曾任刑部主事及濟南大清銀行稽核委員,民國初期參與發起籌建大陸銀行,亦蒐集大量文玩書畫。其所藏蘇軾《功甫帖》,售於紐約蘇富比2013年9月19日,編號565,現藏上海龍美術館。
