古干被譽為現代派中國書法的關鍵人物,亦是著有影響深遠的《現代派書法三步》一書。此書初版以英文於1990年發行,兩年後發行中文版。學者戈登·巴拉斯(Gordon Barrass)「現代派書法的最終目的是為傳遞意念、帶來美學的感動,而非追隨傳統書法的老路。在傳統書法中,文字不僅篇幅較長,更對整體效果影響甚深。」1
中文字為象形符號演變而成,古干不但視現代派書法為一門抽象藝術,更是中華文化、歷史、哲學的結晶。他向中國傳統「天人合一」的觀念取經,其作品先由書寫單字開始,繼而揭示文字的象形符號特質,直至形意兩相平衡,方為上品。是次上拍作品為一「浪」字,先以揮灑大氣揮毫寫字,繼而輕柔渲染。古干更親自鐫刻印章,上面刻有女子與魚,沾上硃砂印於作品上,使「浪」字的內涵更趨圓滿,亦向印章所代表之鑑賞與收藏傳統致意。文字之虛、圖像之實,兩相平衡調和,既帶出「浪」的字義與氣質,亦對書法藝術提供創意的解構角度。古氏大作為世界眾多重要博物館及藏家所收藏。1996年,古干在國際藝壇嶄露頭角,獲知名酒莊木桐堡邀請設計酒標,較早前為該酒莊設計的藝術家有畢加索、馬蒂斯、康丁斯基、米羅等,古干是首位獲邀的中國藝術家。
