魏立剛在天津南開大學修讀數學專業期間學習過北魏碑文、篆刻及書法。自1985年畢業起，他曾任數學教師，後轉教藝術和書法。魏氏熱衷於藝術及現代藝術發展，更有系統地專注鑽研20世紀初日本書法和抽象表現主義的發展，豐富其書法畫風之創作歷程。《十》（拍品編號584）由兩筆墨色呈現數目漢字，筆勢猶勁，揮灑自如，筆法具備日本及西方書畫的大膽作風。魏氏畫作旨在比較抽象表現主義及中國漢字系統兩種概念的相似之處。再者，數學利用符號代表數字和圖形的關係，畫家因此視之為抽象的至高境界。

魏立剛在畫作中解構漢字和方塊書法的不同層面，為其後於1990年代末創作的《魏氏魔塊》系列奠下基礎。《岳陽樓記》（拍品編號587）引用宋代政治家及文學家范仲淹（公元989至1052年）的名詩。詩句原文描述岳陽樓美景，並向地方官滕子京（公元991至1047年）致敬，紀念他修葺原建於三國時期的岳陽樓一事。魏氏則以筆墨和金色壓克力彩描繪出每個漢字，各賦有詩中引據的建築及花卉圖案。
