曾佑和是首批考入輔仁大學的女學生之一，1942年畢業於美術系。她與同校德國藝術史家古斯塔夫·埃克（Gustav Ecke）志趣相投，並且皆渴望以一己所長贊育後人，終結為連理，成藝壇佳話。「我知道我的婚姻並不尋常，但作為獨立女性，我決心為世界文明貢獻自己的力量，不會因戰爭而萎靡」1。1940年代，曾佑和在北京開始藝術生涯；1949年遷居夏威夷，在夏威夷大學任教中國藝術史及繪畫，後獲聘為教授。她曾出版數本關於中國書畫的英文專著，在藝術界影響及眾。
《魚塘，夏威夷》乃曾佑和為檀香山友人的委託而作，完成後一直被友人珍藏家中數十年至今。魚塘是夏威夷民族的重要文化象徵，更是太平洋島國文化中最先進的水產技術。本畫所見的魚塘是夏威夷群島碩果僅存的古老魚塘之一；隨著畫家所住社區不斷發展，魚塘的面貌已改，故她以當代中國藝術語言，演繹他鄉島國群山圍繞、與大海相連的魚塘，藉此向當地歷史文化致意。
曾佑和的繪畫手法雖抽象瑰奇，傳統文化與古意卻深植其中。本作採用的構圖和技巧與另一幅售於香港蘇富比的作品《距離之間》（1991年）類同——中國山水畫的鳥瞰式全景構圖，將下方海面與上方群山合拼成完整格局，令觀者驟生超然於萬物之感；山巒中隱見工整格線、樹木線條筆直。曾氏在本畫採用了獨創的「綴畫」拼貼手法，將水墨、壓克力彩及鋁融匯於畫紙。畫家完成本畫後，將之裱成雙聯幅，與八十及九十年代的多聯幅作品同屬實驗創作，靈感源自美國畫家法蘭克·斯特拉早期的「不規則多邊形」系列。曾佑和在藝術創作和學術之間游刃自得，並跨越國族藩籬，博採中西所長；她深諳中國書畫傳統，亦熟悉西方寫實主義和色彩技法，為現代中國繪畫注入新風。
