余承堯1898年生於福建，早年棄筆從戎，加入國民革命軍，在抗日戰爭期間官拜中將。直到1954年，年屆54歲的余氏創作第一幅畫作，利用來自軍旅生涯的地形學知識，以寫實手法描繪記憶中中國的壯麗江山，追懷故鄉風光。其遊歷經驗廣泛，受此啟發而師法自然。
《山水》（拍品編號511）顯見余氏筆法，畫家先勾畫出山脈輪廓，再以獨有的乾筆，描繪繁密草木和岩石峭壁，筆觸深淺有度。余氏無師自通，雖然未曾受過正規藝術訓練，但憑藉數十年來對古詩、書法及音樂之欣賞，陶冶文人志趣，鞏固其對水墨畫之探知。畫中理想化的山水景致饒有詩意，蜿蜒河川置於山巒遠景中，同時筆法紋理獨特，為群峰賦予書法韻律。畫作流露出余氏對筆法和構圖空間感之信心，其作品備受同代水墨畫家及學者稱譽。
