「空置的明式椅子即是容器,承載所能承載的內涵,格物窮理,似乎於期待中頓悟——它遵從,謙遜,安詳,永遠召喚某個身體的填充,又複悵然若失,因而,它生來就是缺席者的紀念物,影射了遺棄——每張椅子性格有別,我們從中隱約落實前在的身份,或威儀,或文思,或禪意,或華貴,宛如蟬衣,解脫了自然屬性,仍有社會屬性徘徊不去,即考即證。」——徐累,2003年1
徐累被譽為中國當代水墨工筆領域的頂尖藝術家之一,透過細膩筆觸與精確細節,建構出洋溢象徵意義的夢幻世界。他的畫作反覆出現駿馬、蝴蝶、雀鳥與文人供石,在神秘奧妙的構置下呈現充滿視覺隱喻與戲劇效果的精妙場面。
徐累的畫作如同超現實戲劇,既營造出逼真現場,卻又使人懷疑、思索是否真的置身其中。2徐氏以本作兩邊簾幕揭開奇幻舞台,正面展示七張明式座椅,一張更有鸚鵡昂首挺立其上。本作的整體佈置與想像乍看令人聯想到方駿的《明風之一》(拍品編號505),方氏更為徐累早期習藝之師。細看之下,畫中座椅的正面配置與透明構圖,使觀者無法進入切實的畫面空間,凸顯空椅無人的景象。
畫中屏風使觀者目光聚焦於舞台之上。屏風是徐累最喜愛的標誌圖案之一,啟發自明代戲劇插圖的木刻版畫,他以屏風作為暫時的實體間隔,不僅令空間更為複雜,亦使構圖更見靈活,韻律生動,塑造平衡。3內在空間包涵性意味與符號──鸚鵡與明式椅臂4,屏風將之與我們外在的現實世界分割開來。
作為名副其實的當代文人與中國藝術史學者,徐累創造夢幻迷人的畫面,彷彿從現實與歷史衍生而出,不見交錯痕跡。他的作品被納入中美多個重要私人及博物館收藏,當中包括上海美術館、南京藝術學院、北京今日美術館以及華盛頓美國國會圖書館亞洲部。他更曾於世界各地的畫廊及博物館舉行個展及聯展,包括中國美術館、上海美術館、紐約及畢爾巴鄂古根海姆美術館、愛爾蘭現代藝術博物館以及香港藝術中心。
