陳其寬的作品常以其異想天開、充滿奇思妙想之構圖令人眼前一亮。陳氏受訓為建築師,曾與包豪斯(Bauhaus)建築風格大師華特‧葛羅培斯(Walter Gropius)一同工作,還曾執教於麻省理工大學,並在台灣東海大學設計項目上與著名建築師貝聿銘合作。作為畫家,他擅於以創新的視野描繪自然景物,同時又保留了傳統水墨的美學特色。突破傳統束縛,陳氏畫作早在50年代就給中國傳統水墨注入新的活力。如其同時代畫家何懷碩所言,陳氏作品之「簡」源自其對人生及傳統中自然主義哲學之感悟。他深受老子思想的影響,嘗試於作品中詮釋東方精神,闡釋老子學說之精髓,以精煉準確的藝術語言帶給觀者無限啟迪。1 正如其作品《雲開眼》(拍品編號553)中所見,陳其寬所描繪的景象雖有傳統山水之時空與律動,實則為其1945年乘飛機跨越緬甸邊境時所見所感。其中鳥瞰俯視及移動視點成為陳氏作品中的標誌性特徵,靈感源自其建築設計之獨特眼光與對西方繪畫風格之喜愛。
陳氏作品於亞洲、北美及歐洲均屢獲展出,名揚海外。其繪畫題材極為多元,有動物,如猴、貓、魚等,亦有夢幻般的室內場景,擬中國園林及宏偉山巒之姿。在其《仙》、《境》及《瓶》(拍品編號550,552及554)三幅作品中,陳其寬以門窗家具等建築元素引領觀者入畫,層層深入,暢遊其中。其於1996年一次訪談中提及,「有了比例、透視還是不夠的,我們還需要有點趣味在裡面,也許這跟人間要扯上關係」2 是次私人收藏囊括陳氏80年代之作品,風格清新愉悅,展示藝術家與藏家對生活及藝術的熱愛與共鳴。著名學者蘇立文(Michael Sullivan)評價陳其寬作品為其視野與感悟之準確表達,無需多餘說明。3 並非所有藝術作品都需要以嚴肅的藝術表現手法表達對人類的探索。
