Bottles of apple shape are mentioned alongside a range of other naturalistic forms as being produced in the palace workshops early in the Qianlong period. (The enamelling workshop mentions one among a large project completed on 11 October 1737.) Many of these naturalistic forms were left uncompressed, although compressed examples of the full range of forms that may be based on fruit are more common.
The material here is unusually even and white, and presumably to accentuate this, a glossier surface polish has been used—always an option for jade carvers from long before the Qing.
