The carvings are in overall good condition. There are small areas of pitting, surface scratches and minute nicks.

The figure of Zhou Yanzi represents filial piety. This comes from the tale of a young boy who tried to obtain milk for his ailing father by posing as a deer so that he could pass into the deer herd to gather milk. Hence Zhou holds a milk pail in his hands and is covered in deer skin.
