“This folio map celebrates the infrastructure and defensive strength of Guangzhou (Canton), the capital of the Guangdong province. An explanatory inscription at the upper left identifies the city by name, calls attention to its location between the White Cloud (Baiyun) mountains to the north and the Pearl River to the south, and states that because Guangzhou is a strategically important gateway for the country, its defences are especially heavy" (All Under Heaven).
The map reads:
The capital of the Guangdong province is Guangzhou.
North of the city is the Bay yun shan or White Cloud Hill 白雲山, south of it is the Zhu Jiang or Pearl River 珠江, it is of a pivotal position at the gate of our country, therefore defence of the city is particularly important.
