"It is very advisable for those who are interested in things Chinese to add a copy of this album to their collection in Orientalia" (Preface). This album is one of many publications in the 1920s and 1930s that interpreted Chinese shop signs to foreigners. "As the volume's preface notes, early in the twentieth century, many shop signs in China presumed little understanding of written Chinese in order to announce merchant's wares. Each of the eighteen illuminated pages of this book records five to seven of such signs. Text printed in Chinese and English accompanies the illustrations and translates the signs' import into written language" (All Under Heaven).
