A good collection of photographs, many of which can be attributed to the Japanese photographer Sanshichiro Yamamoto who opened a studio in Tokyo in 1882, and later moved to Beijing. In 1906 Yamamoto published a photobook titled Peking, which reproduced many of these images.

This group includes 6 photographs of 'Che-Tai-Ssu' monastery on the western hills outside Beijing, together with 32 photographs taken inside and outside the Forbidden City, including the Heavenly Palace, Imperial Palace, Temple of Heaven, Winter Palace, a Chinese house, the Chi'en-men Bridge, Hata gate, Temple of Confucius, street scenes and the city walls.
