For a nearly identical automata scene see, Bernard Pin, Watches & Automata, The Maurice Sandoz Collection, Vol. I,p.16-19, and Vol. III p.106, Inventory no. 5.1, 2011.

The scene portrays a lady playing the serinette or bird organ. The serinette was a portable organ created in the mid 18th century, its sole purpose was to facilitate teaching the Canary to sing. For what may be considered the ultimate luxury serinette see lot 104.  For examples of the serinette, see: Sharon & Christian Bailly, Flights of fancy, p.49 and for discussions about this instrument and the Canary craze see, Ibid, pp.42-52.
