finely cast and richly gilded throughout, depicting the eight-headed deity standing in alidha with the other two legs lifted off the base, the figure depicted with sixteen arms, each holding a skull cup supporting an animal or personified element, the animals in his right hands depicted facing inwards and the elements in his left depicted facing outwards, the main arms embracing his consort Nairatmya at his front, Nairatmya depicted standing on her leg with her right wrapped around Hevraja's waist, holding a a skull cup in her left hand and a triguk in her hand, both figures adorned with beaded jewellery and attire inset with semi-precious stones and bone ornaments including skull garlands, stand

Condition
The figure is overall in good condition. As visible in the catalogue photos, it is missing its original base.There is oxidisation to the metal, particularly on the reverse, and some rubbing to gilding at peripheral areas. There are some missing hardstone inlays. General surface wear and insignificant bruising to the extremities. The colour in reality is more of a brilliant gold than in the photos, where the colour is a tinge too red.

鎏金銅喜金剛與無我明妃雙修像宏碩,展現二尊藏傳佛教金剛乘薩迦派修襌重要神祇。薩迦派與蒙元統治淵源極深。中統元年(1260),薩迦派五祖八思巴(1235-80)獲忽必烈(1215-94)封為國師,隔年(1262)提拔擅紐瓦爾風格之年輕藝匠阿尼哥(1244-1306)。阿尼哥獲世祖重用,至元十年(1273),授諸色人匠總管府總管,十五年(1278),擢光祿大夫、大司徒,領將作院事。富有之薩迦信徒,向有邀尼泊爾藝匠恭造佛像之傳統。此銅像所見之鎏金厚重及形態巧媚,均屬紐瓦爾特色。時薩迦派與蒙元政府的政治宗教協作緊密,密宗造像姿態靈活生動、四肢矯實有力、比例扁平穩健,正如此像,極富動態,卻不失沈實穩重。西藏薩迦縣薩迦寺藏元十三世紀青黑石圓雕大威德怖畏金剛像,其整體比例平穩踏實,手足矯健,兩側及冠頂頭首怒目圓睜,皆與此尊相近,可資對比,圖見 Ulrich von Schroeder,《西藏佛教雕塑》,香港,2001年,卷2,頁901,圖版210C。且參考著名 Fournier 舊藏黑石彩繪大黑天像,紀年至元廿九(1292),主尊周邊神衹肢體強健有力、重心沈穩,與此可較,圖見 Gilles Béguin,《Art ésotérique de l’Himâlaya》,巴黎,1990年,頁55,編號21。
此雙身像乃一體鑄造而成,造型出眾、技臻藝絕,十六嘎巴拉缽內動物與神衹,無不精緻入微,誠佛教塑像精品。喜金剛主臂交疊,擁明妃入懷,餘十四臂以扇狀散開分持嘎巴拉缽,雙身右傾呈戰鬥立姿。喜金剛與明妃皆袒身,分別垂飾人頭及骷髏瓔珞,圓目怒睜,神情緊繃,主尊雙唇微張,呼應喜金剛誦原音吽字震懾天下之說。無我明妃,具般若智慧。觀此尊莊嚴罕稀之鎏金銅雙身像,明妃左手環抱喜金剛,把八世紀東印度文獻中提及之熱情抱擁以得靜謐喜悅,表達得淋漓盡致,正如《喜金剛本續》所曰:「足踏四魔現忿怒相。帶髑髏鬘及妙瓔珞得大無畏……黑色忿怒以灰塗身……入樂寂靜離煩惱縛妙三摩地……彼四大種明妃以種種金剛歌詠供養。」英譯及詳論見 Rob Linrothe,《Ruthless Compassion》,倫敦,1999年,頁268-9。
