Examination under ultraviolet light reveals two small spots of restoration: one at upper left corner at sky, and the other above the mountain at sky in the upper left quadrant. Framed.

Hendra Gunawan is admired as one of the most important artist in propelling the development of Indonesian Modern Art. Growing up in a local village, he was inspired by the Indonesian village life, which had a direct influence on his painting style. His oeuvre is filled with colourful depictions of the rural lifestyle and traditions, and can be seen as a celebration of the common man. As an artist with political aspirations, Hendra used painting as a method to document the lives of the locals, as well as his ideals, thereby exploring the freedom that was found in artistic expression.

The present lot Pejual Topeng (Mask Seller) features a mask seller in the midst of his daily work. Hendra has illustrated the rural narrative with a brilliant colour palette, that gifts the villagers with an otherworldly existence in their environment. The role of the mask seller reveals Hendra’s affection with the Wayang Kulit. Also known referred to as Indonesian shadow puppets. The current piece deliberately draws attention to the facial expressions of the people and the masks with exaggerated mannerisms, thereby to reference the local handicraft culture.

The artist viewed the painting medium as a means to communicate with the public upon all levels. By visually documenting the everyday activities and tasks of the villagers, each painting by Hendra pays homage to the cultural heritage of Indonesia. Pejual Topeng (Mask Seller) is evident of the artist's great respect towards his country and heritage.
