拍品資料及來源

The Javanese painter Widayat established his own artistic voice by referencing Indonesian mythology and religious literature in his paintings. He emerged as an artist post-independence Indonesia where there was interest in finding new artistic expression. The artist’s personal aesthetic and style was a deliberate separation from the Mooi-Indie paintings that were favored by the European colonialists in Indonesia. The paintings are an imaginative depiction of the archipelago’s wildlife paired together with fantastical creatures.

Burung Blekok features a Javanese Egret, identifiable by their thin milky white ornamental feathers.  This is an extremely special work from Widayat’s oeuvre, for he rarely portrayed a single type of wildlife in the narratives. The monochrome color scheme is also unusual for the artist. The background is composed of dark earthy tones, which accentuate the whiteness of the birds’ feathers. It should be noted that Widayat found his inspiration from spiritual references that explored the creation of the universe and the birth of humans.
