Every Vietnamese artist has experienced living in the countryside for a period of life. They have been taught about traditional art of the cultural vestiges like the village community house temple and pagoda from the first lessons, which will stay with them for the years to come…Vietnamese are generally strong on “emotions”; one could specify further dash of love, sympathy, passion and emotional bonds. These factors are the inner life of Vietnamese paintings.” –

-The Hanoi Fine Arts Publishing House, Young Artist of Vietnam, 1966.

In Mai Thu’s works, the poetic figures are formed by the application of thin light brush strokes. Silk painting is ingrained in Vietnamese art history. The material is delicate and refine which requires the artist to be patient and dedicated to his craft. The current work Tea Time is evident of such aesthetics. Soft curves trace the outline of the stylized figures to show their slender bodies. The combination of the light, shade and color creates a sense of harmony in the painting.

Human interaction was an important theme in Mai Thu's artworks. In the present work the artist pays tribute to the Vietnamese pastime of drinking tea. The complimentary colors of blues and oranges in the background establishes a lyricism that compliments each other. The vibrant colors also create a spirit of liveliness in the scene, thereby communicating the joyful conversation and shared intimacy between the two friends.
