Condition
This work is in good overall condition as viewed, as is the canvas which is clear and taut. There is evidence of light wear and associated losses to paint at edges due to abrasions with the frame lines, but this does not affect the overall image. There are very minor and sporadic areas of craquelure present throughout surface of canvas, all stable and consistent with age. Three very small areas of paint loss present: at woman's finger nail along right edge, at man's elbow along left edge, and at pink pigment on woman's shirt. Framed.

Upon viewing the present lot, it is apparent that Hendra Gunawan is an emotional artist who delighted in embracing the spirit of his native people. Painted in 1980, Two Figures illustrates the pungent emotional connection between two people and bares the power of human touch. In an effort to eliminate distance between the two, the woman rests her slender hand on the man’s shoulder. The stiff and hesitant body language of the figures permeates the scene with a sense of tension and ambiguity. Possibly inspired by his time in prison, when he was stymied from spending time with his dear wife and longed for her embrace, this work overflows with the suffering that inevitably accompanies love.
The deep blue backdrop provides the painting with a chilling feel, coloring the infinite lake, which seems to merge with the steep mountains behind. A lover of the countryside, Hendra hints at the inherent telepathy between human beings and their natural environment. In this striking composition, he exemplifies the nuanced dynamics within a human relationship. The two are physically close yet psychologically distant, embodying lovers and strangers simultaneously. This theatrical and enigmatic painting exemplifies the myriad layers that bind people together in reality.
