There is evidence of light wear, handling, slight paint losses and very minor tears to the edges and corners of the canvas. Upon close observation, a pinhole sized area of paint loss is visible above the woman's bun. There is very slight cracking to pigment along the top edge. A 2 inch vertical crack to pigment is visible under very close inspection at the man's left ankle. The back of the canvas shows evidence of restoration at the top left edge, top right edge and bottom left edge of the work, consistent with areas where there are holes to the original canvas. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals evidence of inpainting to these three restored areas. Framed.

Sudjana Kerton’s body of works reveals a multitude of themes and influences. He is celebrated as one of the key modern artists in Indonesia’s history. Throughout his career Kerton illustrated the daily lives of local people at work and play in the narratives of his paintings. However he chose not to focus on politics in the artworks, rather finding a creative voice amongst the social lives of his peers and neighbors, thus the paintings depict Indonesia with sensitivity, compassion, and a sense of humor.

The present painting Pijat (Massage) is depiction about the daily life and culture of his people. The composition of the work is inspired by parody, for as per the title of the scene at hand shows a man receiving a massage. However, contrary to the relaxing and peaceful connotation that the act implies, the man’s body is contorted comically, while the woman seen smiling oblivious to his discomfort. The tale of the man and woman in Pijat (Massage) is a representation of human connections and rapports.

Kerton’s oeuvre transcended what was seen as mundane and ordinary, and transformed these moments into dramatic narratives that played with daily existence and nostalgia for one’s homeland. Works such as Pijat (Massage) have ultimately established the artist and his paintings as an important part of the country’s legacy.
