In the present Lot Re-birth, the artist Alfredo Esquillo explores the theme of transfiguration. Through the transformation of the physical body, one is transported from the earthly sphere to the divine realm. Re-birth emphasizes the female form to articulate the subject matter of birth, which the artist regards as a dynamic fusion of life processes and divine discoveries.

The painting reveals the body and conceals the inner workings of the mind and the spirit. On the left panel, the female figure is suspended in mid-air and her body is covered amidst the clouds; while on the right panel, her nude body is covered by a large blanket or cloth. Here, the artist shows the human form as simultaneously corporeal and incarnated.

Esquillo selects his material particularly to convey these polarized states of being. A heighted sense of emotional response is achieved the synching of various elements within the composition depicted via his very fine brushwork. The artist’s virtuosity is demonstrated via meticulous details and textures on the painting—the luster of brass against the leaden ground; the touch of a gloved hand on flaming heart; the corporeal body against its sinuous outlines and the carnality of flesh against exaltation of spirit.
