Here, an imaginary landscape sets the base of the painting. The burst of colours and expressionistic brush strokes suggest a harmonious discord, much like the first musical note that some cultures believed that might have signaled the creation of the universe.
The idea of creative process springs to the viewer’s mind. The composition composes a visual image of a mass of ideas springing forth a coherent train of thought with deep emotion and pleasure. When one looks closely, a green and white animal figure could be seen rising from the sea of hues -- its expression and stature, conquering and triumphant. Twig-like growths emerge out from the mass of colours, clinging onto the frame.
Just like jazz music relies on improvisation, Cruz’s painting here exhibits the sensibilities reminiscent of well-formed notes composed with thought and expression. The result is as whimsical as it is chaotic; paints splattered onto the canvas and drip down from the frame. Jazz in a Restless Landscape of Silhouettes and Screeches thus reminds us that one may find beauty in places unexpected.
