Yunizar’s formalistic inclinations – the attention to line, form, colour, and rhythm – place aesthetics at the forefront of his works. The balance of negative and positive space in the painting Laugh, as well as the sensitivity to lines and textures in the work, emphasizes Yunizar’s dexterity as an artist. The painting's portrayal of an unconventional friendship between a bird and a donkey, draws on themes of community, compassion, and mutual rapport despite their differences. In some sense, this concept is congruent with Yunizar’s strong emphasis on his disassociation from socio-politics in his art; it presents a unified world, and as shown within his characteristically child-like scribbles, expresses a light-heartedness which one immediately senses. There is an atmosphere of spontaneity and automatism, which renders the work uninhibited, appealing to our instinctive sense of aestheticism and personal connections.
Graduating from the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta in 1999, Yunizar continues to live and work in the cultural capital till this day. A member of the ‘Jendela’ art group, a prominent contemporary art collective in Indonesia, Yunizar held his first solo museum exhibition at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Museum in 2007. In 1995, Yunizar was awarded Best Painting by the Peksiminas III Exhibition, and received Best Painting from the Philip Morris Award V (1998). His collection of works provide a fresh insight into the many nuances of communication, as well as a visual play with language to engage the audience into the paintings.
