《風景》誕生於朱沅芷的「舊金山時期」,「立體主義」與「共色主義」對他此階段藝術風格的影響在這幅鉛筆素描中盡顯。他運用立體主義式物象分割,將風景中的山峰、樹木、車子、房屋等拆解成細小的幾何圖案,其中尤以三角形居多,賦予了構圖一種穩定感和堅實感。三角錐形的遠山的描繪方式透露朱沅芷作畫時可能想到了塞尚筆下的聖維克多山,素描中雖然沒有彩色,但他重複、緊湊的平行用筆與畫面中的留白形成了明暗反差,以表現實物的體積感和色感。在朱沅芷對光影熟練的把握下,僅用一色即把對象的層次感、質感和動感描繪出來,風景中的充沛陽光和輕盈微風躍於紙上。
