「武迎兒象 水滸傳中迎兒最苦 不知其叔顧不得她了 之後嫁的人好否」
《武迎兒像》創作於夏陽長居紐約二十餘年後返回台灣的前夕,歷經了從巴黎開始的半具象風格的「毛毛人」系列,到紐約時期結合了照相寫實技巧的「飄飄人」系列,此時的他重新擁抱最熟悉的中國傳統文化,開始了以神話、小說、民俗人物或民間故事為題材的探討。
武迎兒是誰?原來她是武大郎之女、武松的親侄女。但相比《水滸傳》對武氏兄弟、潘金蓮等人的濃墨重彩,花在迎兒身上的筆墨很淡,她就如夏陽筆下的描繪,像個飄渺的影兒。書中的迎兒一直拙口笨舌、軟弱可悲,在繼母的虐待下苟且偷生。直到潘金蓮橫屍武松刀下,她才第一次主動表達了自己的感受,說道:「叔叔,我害怕。」可她這世上僅存親人的回應卻是,「孩兒,我顧不得你了」,任憑這孤兒隨風飄零,成為異鄉人。在畫中,夏陽以短促顫動的線條形成了一個沒有面容的毛毛人,安置於由冷色調構建的劇場式背景,定格了其含辛茹苦的一幕。配上幾行打油詩,交待了主角武迎兒的冷色人生,道盡了滄桑無奈。動感卻又輕飄的毛毛人,在空曠虛無的空間中,顯得如浮萍一般孤立無援、飄忽不定。夏陽所創的「毛毛人」象徵了「異鄉人」,既暗喻了自身幾經顛沛流離的孤苦,更放大了現代社會人時常感受到的荒謬疏離之感,回歸至其藝術中永恆關懷的主題。
