Condition
The unlined canvas has been strip lined. There is excellent retention of the paint surface in the still life objects with lovely detail and strong coloration. A slight degree of thinness can be seen in the pigment of the dark background, but this is not distracting. Under UV light: very little fluoresces. there are just a few retouches along bottom edge, some on the knife handle, and a few around the leaves at center right. there is no need for further work and this painting can be hung in its present state.

This painting displays van Streek’s artistic skill at depicting different objects, from the precise rendering of the fragile porcelain pieces and wine glass, to the richness of the velvet drapery and textures of the fruit. He was strongly influenced by Willem Kalf (1619-1693) and certain elements of this composition, such as a focus on only a few carefully chosen objects and the device of a slightly tilted bowl of fruit set against strong vertical objects, are reminiscent of Kalf’s later pronk still lifes. Streek reused certain objects and the same Wan-li bowl and porcelain vase can be seen in a work sold at Sotheby’s Amsterdam on 8 May 2007, lot 102.
