Condition
The thick wood panel is uncradled and has four wood battens affixed to the reverse. overall the paint surface has been well preserved, with thick impasto and very nice retention of detail. some scuffing at upper edge. there are two horizontal cracks at right, from right edge extending over to shoulder of saint. some areas of lifting that have been laid down can be seen in area below sleeve and left hand of saint, in dark area of drapery at bottom, and in lower left background. these all appear to be stable. there are some raised areas that give the surface a somewhat uneven surface, and these are probably due to various knots in the wood panel. under ultraviolet light, one can see retouches of varying size scattered throughout. most are in the form of very small retouches on saint's white drapery and flesh tones of his face. a larger area of retouching can be seen at lower right above demon's head.

Fray Alonso de Zamora led an active workshop at a monastery in the city of Burgos in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Burgos, situated along the River Arlazón in Northern Spain, had a thriving wool trade that grew dominant due to privileges received in the late 15th century by the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. This prosperity encouraged business, the arts, and the importing of goods from countries to the north, particularly Flanders.
Notable works by the artist include a set of eight paintings on canvas, depicting the Passion of Christ, in the monastery of San Salvador de Oña (painted circa 1500-1510), and an altarpiece formerly of the monastery of San Pedro de Tejada, now in the Museo de Burgos, depicting nine scenes from the life of Saint Peter, painted circa 1503-1506.
