Formerly in the collection of Henriette Yardley Clark, Wife of Dr. John Yardley Clark, Personal Physician to Joseph Bonaparte.
Condition
In good condition, especially considering the age of the piece. The metal shows some scratching, denting and discoloration throughout. The enamel is in very good condition, displaying only minor chipping under close inspection. The cameos are all intact and display minor surface reaching fractures on a few that should not affect the stability of the piece when worn. The general theme of the cameos seems to be different players significant to a Bacchic ritual. Accompanied by a fitted box. NECKLACE: One of the links connecting the central cameo has become opened and can be easily be repaired by a jeweler. The back of the central cameo has a pin as well for securing the necklace. BRACELETS: The bracelets show the most enamel loss though this is still minor and likely due to wear, only noticeable when closely examined. Both secure with clasps. DIADEM: Two of the pins which secure the tops of the diadem together on the reverse are in need of reinforcement which can be provided by a jeweler as they seem to have come apart over the years. The silhouette of the diadem is still intact but may benefit from this repair in the future. There is a long pin stem that runs the length of the diadem and with the shape of its base. EARRINGS: The posts open from the top of the earring and secure there as well. Length approximately 3 inches.

Born in Philadelphia in 1802, Henriette Marie Girard and her sister Caroline were placed under the care of Stephen Girard after their father Jean passed away in 1803. As a French-born citizen, Stephen was one of the individuals who assisted Joseph Bonaparte, brother to Napoleon, following his exile after the Battle of Waterloo. After her first husband passed away in 1823, Henriette married John Yardley Clark, who was Bonaparte's physician.
John Yardley Clark went on many trips with Henriette and her sister Caroline, who often kept diaries of their adventures. On one such trip to Florence, Caroline noted getting a complete set of cameos from her brother, and then later recalled a trip to a goldsmith in Geneva, suggesting that this suite is perhaps where the Italian cameos were mounted.
When Caroline died in 1875 all of her belongings went to her sister Henriette, including this important and historic suite of cameo jewels.
