The India-style jewels created by Cartier during the 1920s defined an incredibly influential time period for the Parisian jeweler. Jacques Cartier first voyaged to India in 1911 when he was asked by the Indian elite to re-set and re-work their traditional jewels to fit the modern Parisian style. The result of this endeavor was a collection of jewelry that influenced future iconic Cartier designs and is still highly coveted by jewelers and collectors worldwide. The combination of vibrant colors in all arrays, unusually shaped stones and intricate metalwork created highly stylized pieces that remain contemporary through the test of time. The India-style is apparent in the intricacy of the foliate-design paired with a variety of variously-shaped rubies, emeralds and diamonds as seen in this brooch. It was during this time that Cartier London created jewelry that not only functioned as wearable ornaments, but also as works of art.
