Condition
Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down, attached to the mount at all four corners, floating in the mount. There is a diagonal flattened crease in the lower left corner and a 0.5cm. tear at the centre of the upper edge. Apart from some scattered spots of foxing and some slight time staining to the sheet, this work is in good condition.
Colours: In comparison to the printed catalogue illustration, the paper tone is slightly warmer and the ink is stronger in the original.

1951年初,畢加索捕捉到一個新主題 – 舊時的騎士 – 在之後的幾個月裡面,他以一貫的熱忱和豐富想像,持續探索這個主題。這種專心致志的態度和盈溢不斷的創意貫徹畢加索的藝術生涯。約翰·理查森曾經形容這種特質為「連續工作,乃為畢生習慣。他會捕捉某些主題或主旨,發展出一套適合的表達語言,在過程中渾然忘我。」(J·理查森,《畢加索的一生·第一冊:1881-1906年,倫敦,1991年,第149頁)。這種態度亦展現於他的騎士作品當中,該系列由穿著盔甲男性形像的簡單描繪以至更為複雜的構圖,應有盡有。

然而,在畢加索的作品中,騎士與鬥牛士之間關係可謂千絲萬縷。畢加索在五十年代期間居於瓦洛里,經常觀賞鬥牛演出,這種意象對他非常重要,彷彿像是一種圖騰,滲入其作品的方方面面。《騎士與侍從》的騎士身披精巧細緻的盔甲,與鬥牛士的花紋服裝互相呼應,而在另一成畫於1951年的素描當中,畢加索將這種關係表達得更明顯,將騎士直接置於鬥牛場內。這樣看來,畢加索筆下的騎士,無疑啟發自西班牙最有名的鬥牛士 - 倒霉的唐吉訶德,將其內心融合高貴與悲情的氣質表現得淋漓盡致,令人驚嘆。
