boldly cast with a plump mythical beast standing foursquare, the fierce leonine head with bulging eyes beneath thick eyebrows, its mouth slightly open revealing its teeth, surmounted by a phoenix perched on its back, the feathered wings with incised archaistic scrollwork, sweeping back towards the lion’s tail, the bird's head with eagle's beak and curled crest all superbly embellished with various semi-precious stones including malachite, agate, carnelian, rose-quartz, lapis-lazuli and white jade in a myriad of colours

Condition
The incense burner is in overall good condition with expected pitting, general surface wear and scratches. The semi-precious stones may have been later added or stabilised. The original casting holes were filled in at the time of production and are still visible.

熏爐作鳳鳥奇獸形，爐身鑄造精良，嵌多彩珍寶，鎏金厚實，保存完整，珍稀非凡。如此細作良工，可比較一件麒麟形熏爐，藏於台北國立故宮博物院，錄於《故宮歷代香具圖錄》，台北，1994年，編號119；另一例，出自 Heber R. Bishop 舊藏，售於香港佳士得，2004年11月1日，編號878，曾二度售於紐約蘇富比，1973年11月20、21日，編號39，2007年9月18日，編號14，還有另一件類同熏爐，售於香港蘇富比1985年5月22日，編號261。
相類嵌寶鎏金銅熏爐，無作鳳鳥高踞形制，可參考一麒麟形作例，藏於倫敦維多利亞與艾爾伯特博物館，刊於 Stephen Bushell，《Chinese Art》，卷II，倫敦，1919年，編號96。二件此形熏爐曾售於香港蘇富比，其一於1990年5月15日，編號365，另一則於2006年4月10日，編號1542；還有一件三鳳形熏爐，出自Rothschild家族珍藏，售於香港蘇富比2009年10月8日，編號1734。
「鷹熊」音同英雄，相應「英雄獨立」一話，鷹熊造形首見於西漢英雄合卺銅瓶，可見展翅飛鳥佇立於熊形之上，並連雙聯瓶，河北省博物館藏一件出土合卺瓶，載於《中國青銅器全集：秦漢》，卷12，北京，1998年，圖版73。
鷹熊造形於宋代漸見盛行，至清代更可見其作於不同媒材，見一件玉雕作例，售於倫敦佳士得1968年2月26日，編號106，後於1977年6月21日售於倫敦蘇富比，編號293；另有一件犀角雕作例，售於紐約蘇富比2007年3月19日，編號370。
