Wang Shixiang in Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, vol. 1, Hong Kong, 1990, p. 150, notes that records of jichimu can be found as early as the Jin dynasty (A.D. 265-420). Historically it has been considered as a strong and heavy wood with beautiful grain and a good material for sculpting art objects.

Compare a related jichimu brushpot, formerly in the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture, sold at Christie's New York, 19th September 1996, lot 67.
