of flattened globular form supported on a short foot, superbly decorated on each side in varying tones of iron-red with an en face five-clawed dragon writhing sinuously with its scaly body around a 'flaming pearl', the beast rendered with piercing eyes framed by thick furrowed brows, long flowing mane and flaring horns, against a background with evenly spaced lingzhi cloud swirls and above turbulent crashing waves picked out in cobalt-blue, the tubular neck decorated with lingzhi-shaped clouds and flanked by a pair of ruyi-shaped handles extending downwards to the shoulder, the handles reverse-decorated in rich cobalt-blue tones save for the white outlines, the recessed base inscribed in underglaze blue with a six-character seal mark

The overall condition is good, except for some characteristic fritting to part of the mouthrim which has been slightly polished and professionally restored. The iron red has been superbly preserved with only light expected scratches.

此件扁壺飾釉上礬紅彩龍紋，或為孤品，著錄不見同紋飾形制作例。一件近類乾隆青花胭脂彩雲龍紋雙鳳耳扁壺，出自清宮舊藏，然器形、雙耳及雲紋樣式，均與現例相異，一例錄於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集．青花釉裏紅（下）》，上海，2000年，圖版232（圖一），另有一對例，陳列於重華宮翠雲館，見《明清室內陳設》，北京，2008年，圖103（圖二）。器身五爪祥龍，正面迎人，矯健霸氣。類同龍紋，可參考一件青花紅彩雲龍紋圓蓋盒，《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集》，上述出處，圖版224。

此件拍品雖似乾隆青花釉裏紅扁壺，後者壺肩雙耳造形多更簡略，飾十字形雲紋，不同於此處所繪冉冉升起之如意雲紋。可參考北京故宮博物院藏品，如同前出處，圖版213。Norton 珍藏一件扁壺，1963年11月5日售於倫敦蘇富比，編號203，現藏新南威爾士州立美術館，曾展於《Chinese Ceramics》，新南威爾士州立美術館，雪梨，1965年，編號116。試比較 Gerald Reitlinger 舊藏一例，刊載於 Soame Jenyns，《Later Chinese Porcelain》，倫敦，1951年，圖版XCIV，圖1。香港藝術館亦藏一器，出展於《清瓷薈錦：香港藝術館藏清代陶瓷》，香港藝術館，香港，1984年，編號66。還有一件出自徐展堂博士收藏，錄於《徐氏藝術館：陶瓷篇IV．清代》，香港，1995年，圖版84。

此類乾隆青花釉裏紅扁壺，英國鐵路基金會曾藏一例，二度售於香港蘇富比，1975年11月17日，編號221，1989年5月16日，編號37，後於1996年11月3日售於香港佳士得，編號776。香港蘇富比2009年4月8日售出另外一件，編號1605（圖三）。亦可比較一件近類扁壺，刊於《Exhibition of Imperial Porcelain of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong》，S. Marchant & Son，倫敦，1996年，編號46。

扁壺器形取材早明作例，參見一件永樂花卉紋扁壺，瓶口覆土耳其式鎏銀蓋，出自伊斯坦堡奧圖曼宮廷舊藏，載於康蕊君，《Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum》，伊斯坦堡，倫敦，1986年，卷2，圖版613。大維德基金會也有一件器形近似扁壺，現展於倫敦大英博物館，收錄於《Oriental Ceramics. The World's Great Collections》，東京，1982年，卷6，圖版28。還可比較兩件宣德折枝茶花紋扁瓶，展於耿寶昌主編，《故宮博物院藏明初青花瓷》，北京，2002年，上冊，圖版87-88。
