Catalogue Note
Guan-Lu Yuan boasts one of the most significant private collections of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy in North America. The core of this collection is devoted to seventeenth and eighteenth century Chinese artists who were active during the Ming-Qing transitional period and are well documented in Zhou Lianggong's book Du Hua Lu (Lives of Painters). Highlights from this collection have been widely published; many artworks were on public view in leading museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Asia Society in New York. The owners of Guan-Lu Yuan, a husband and wife team, are foreign to the Chinese language, but their successful collection demonstrates a deep understanding for Chinese culture and art. The husband carried out, among others, the roles of the Trustee of the China Institute in New York and Chairman of the Board at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and devoted an entire lifetime towards promoting Chinese Art in North America. For select artworks from the Guan-Lu Yuan Collection, please see lot 442 by Wang Jian, lot 495 by Shitao, and lot 502 by Gong Xian.
