the hinged top incised with four large phoenix around a lozenge-shaped panel, all within a ruyi cloud and strapwork frame with a keyfret band at the edges, all picked out in red, green and black and reserved on a brown ground, the sides similarly decorated, set with an incised gilt-bronze lock plate to the front face, a pair of hinges to the rear and a drop handle to the left and right side, the interior lacquered red
Condition
There is a dent with associated cracks to the top and lower left corners of the cover, and front right corner near the bottom of the box. There are general areas of stains, lacquer loss (particularly around the metal lockplates and along the rims), age cracks and overpaint. The lacquer to the base of the box is largely lost. The interior is re-lacquered.
