Mak Kum-Siew began his journey in ink in 1982. Inspired by his friendship with the artist Fang Zhaolin, Mak chose to use ink to address contemporary issues rather than classical themes. "I slowly became aware of the traps of dogma and self-importance inherent in so much of [the classical ink] work, and I began to look beyond the self-referential world of the avant-garde." (Talking Pictures: Paintings by Mai Jinyao, Schoeni Hong Kong, 1995, p. 8) As described in the inscription, My First Camera is an image that personifies animal subjects taking a photographic portrait for the first time. Mak’s composition is a playful reflection on modern life, creating a fun and engaging image filled with open-ended questions.
