朱銘生於台灣苗栗縣一個小村莊。在鄉村多年的雕刻和繪畫生涯，讓他沉澱出獨到的技藝和心得。耕耘經年的朱銘現已是享負盛名的台灣當代雕塑家，作品以青銅、粘土和木為主，其「太極系列」尤為著名。不過他的畫家身份卻不甚為人所知。朱銘的繪畫與雕塑一樣，以道家思想為宗，形態寫意流暢，寓動於靜，亦可見傳統中國畫的意韻。明末八大山人（1626-1705年 ）凝練豪邁的筆墨對朱銘影響極深，故他主張「化繁為簡」的表現方式，取其意、重其氣，進入返璞歸真的狀態。《五雞圖》展露朱銘回顧昔日台灣鄉鎮的謙厚情愫，濃重有力的筆墨，與其熟練流暢的塑形技巧和剛中帶柔的創作力量同出一轍。
